Last night, I went to the Heels on Wheels Showcase @ Branded Saloon, where I was immersed in funky Queer vibe, from watching SassaBrass killing all of it in a burlesque piece – which was an ode to both the value of Black Lives and the healing and life-giving power of the p*$$y. There were literary musings which shared intimate details of events that shaped the author’s lives and a songwriter’s journey to performing their first song in front of an audience, which was all very meta..as last night was that first time. The artwork moved me and I was especially inspired by Rachel Messer, the songwriter. The reverberations reflected ALL of the self-doubt and fear that can, at times, hold me back in my journey to actualizing my goals.

The thing of beauty in their story, was remembering that not all of my problems are unique to me, and there is a commonality (overcoming fear) which knows no creed or color, as an artist. I recognize where I allow my fear to slow me down or entertain doubt in my ability to accomplish a goal leads to procrastination. Additionally, I recognize where some of my most brilliant moments have come out of taking a deep-ass breath and facing the fear head on.  (Art) has been like having a child that knows what it needs and has called it into itself, asking me to stretch out in ways I could not have imagined. For instance, it has been a minute since I have written anything for public consumption and it has been in part due to my fear, fear of being called and stretched out to borders unrecognized, and within that germinating period I have been calling experiences in to my life which nourish the growth of my artistry.

Another source of inspiration for overcoming my fear is EFT Tapping, it is a way to dislodge energy blockages that have been embedded in the energetic body for a minute. What I like about Tapping is that it is a way to create a simple ritual that can virtually be done anywhere and the effects are lasting; also once you know the format you can begin performing it immediately. A few weeks ago a friend guided me through the Tapping sequence and within a matter of ten minutes; I felt a release in energy in the form of crying and ecstatic laughter, as I felt the weight of fear being lifted off of my chest. From that moment I have been Tapping on all sorts of things, from the fear of failure to releasing heart aches; and I feel and see a huge difference in the way I interact in the world.
